The second-largest WSOP Main Event is now down to six players from a 7,874-strong field and just two days away from crowning its victor. The 2018 World Championship winner will be awarded a hefty payout of $8.8 million and a shiny gold bracelet, and will be treated to the accolades that go along with the feat of winning the world’s most prestigious No-Limit Hold’em tournament.
Day 8 of the Main Event was played Thursday at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. It started with nine players who will remain in history as the 2018 final tablists. Following several hours of fierce battling, the day was concluded when Australia’s Alex Lynskey hit the rail in 7th place for $1.5 million. Antoine Labat and Artem Metalidi were the other two players to bust from the tournament on Thursday. The players finished ninth and eighth, respectively, for payouts of $1 million and $1.25 million.
Michael Dyer bagged and tagged the largest chip stack of the day to secure a comfortable lead into the second day of final table play. The player put a hefty 156.5 million worth of chips in his bag. Dyer has more chips than the players ranking second and third in the temporary leaderboard. Nicolas Manion, the start-of-the-day chip leader bagged 72.25 million at the end of Day 8 and John Cynn scooped the third largest stack with 61.55 million.
It is important to note that Dyer was an overnight chip leader earlier into the tournament. He scooped the largest stack at the end of Day 5. And it should be said that the player has never really lost momentum since then.
Commenting on his Thursday performance at the final table, Dyer said that he did not change his playing style from the previous days and that he just kept trying to make good decisions. The player also praised his fellow competitors, saying that they all played very well and that the final table was pretty solid.
The Other Hopefuls
The top three stacks, Dyer, Manion, and Cynn, will be accompanied by three more players when they return to play the second day of the final table later today. Tony Miles (57.5 million), Joe Cada (29.275 million), and Aram Zobian (16.7 million) were the other three participants to make it through the whole ordeal on Day 8 of the Main Event.
It can be said that of the six remaining players, Cada is the most experienced one when it comes to Main Event action. The player is seeking to win his second title from the series and thus repeat his feat from 2009. Cada was just 21 when he claimed the most coveted poker title.
The player has won two more gold bracelets since his 2009 historic run to cement his name in WSOP archives. Commenting on what he expects from the remaining portion of the tournament, Cada told WSOP staff that there has been a lot of pressure making it into the final table and that there has been just as much pressure into that final stage of play. He further dwelt that it would be “sweet” if he makes a run, but he would not be that disappointed if he goes out next.
Six-handed play resumes today at 5:30 pm local time at the host venue. The remaining players will play down to the final three.
