Of all 109 players who went into Day 6 of the 2018 WSOP Main Event, only 26 managed to keep their shot at the first-place prize of $8.8 million and the coveted champion’s gold bracelet. And it was Aram Zobian who bagged the largest stack last night at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino after a roller coaster day.
Zobian had his ups and downs during the first half of the day, but a hot streak of hefty pots before dinner break helped the player build a solid stack which he only enlarged during post-dinner action. The player eventually put 41.585 million in his bag and was actually the only contender to collect a stack beyond the 40-million mark.
Commenting on being the chip leader into Day 7 of the world’s most prestigious No-Limit Hold’em tournament, Zobian said that he could not quite comprehend how good he ran throughout the day. The player further noted that he hoped he would keep his momentum into Day 7 and would follow the same strategy – “stay cool, confident and try to play my best”.
Despite bagging the overnight chip lead the player suffered several heavy blows during play. He lost a massive pot before the dinner break and then another one afterwards. That second unfortunate hand resulted in Artem Metalidi doubling through Zobian. Metalidi eventually collected the end-of-the-day’s second largest stack of 30.845 million.
Cada Still in Contention, Minkin Out
There were several players whose run was followed closely on Day 6, and former WSOP Main Event champion Joe Cada and Kelly Minkin, the last woman standing in this year’s edition of the World Championship, were two such players.
Cada is the only former Main Event champ left in the run for this year’s title. The player bagged and tagged 8.85 million last night to secure a spot among the final 26. Cada won the tournament back in 2009 when he was just 21.
Unlike Cada, Minkin could not make it through the end of the day. The poker pro looked to improve her 29th-place finish in the 2015 Main Event. She busted in 50th place last night, good for a payout of $156,265.
The remaining 26 players are set to return at the host venue today to play down to the official nine-handed final table. Each of them is guaranteed a minimum cash of $282,630, but all eyes and hopes are certainly set on the first-place prize of $8.8 million.
Aside from Cada, there is one more player to have previously played at the final table of the World Championship still in contention for the 2018 title. Sylvain Loosly from France took fourth place in the 2013 edition of the Main Event for a payout of $2,792,533. The player is now looking to improve his previous run in the tournament and eventually claim the coveted gold bracelet.
