Daniel Ospina made history at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino last night as he navigated through a field of 260 fellow players to become Colombia’s first-ever WSOP gold bracelet winner. The player topped the field of Event #14: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em 2-7 Lowball Draw.
Ospina also collected $87,678 for outlasting the tournament’s field. It is interesting to note that the player finished runner-up in the same event three years ago. Ospina said last night that finally winning the tournament really meant the world to him.
The Colombian went on to say that he had actually taken some time off poker and that he had reached a point where he had not been sure whether he wanted to go back to the felt. However, it seems that his victory might have changed his mind and we might get to see more of the player in future.
As mentioned above, Ospina battled a field of 260 entries. The top 39 finishers received a portion of the $351,000 prize pool. Notables like Shaun Deeb, Daniel Weinman, Maria Ho, and Robert Mizrachi can be spotted in the list of players to have cashed in the tournament.
The $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em 2-7 Lowball Draw was played over three days. Ospina took the chip lead at some point on Day 2 and never really looked back. He entered the final day of action with a commanding chip lead and kept his momentum throughout the day.
Heads-Up Recap
Ospina busted Deeb in third place to grab his chips and head into heads-up against Timothy Mcdermott with a big advantage. The eventual champion had 1.37 million in chips at the time to Mcdermott’s 580,000. Both players were aiming for their first gold bracelet from the series.
Heads-up did not last long, although Mcdermott really tried to put up some resistance to the only other man left at the table besides him.
Chips swung back and forth for a very short while. Ospina then scooped a large pot from his final opponent. The two players then folded a couple of hands before the final one of the tournament was dealt.
It saw Ospina shove and Mcdermott call for his last 200,000 chips. The two players drew one and Mcdermott showed [Qx][10x][7x][5x][3x], while Ospina showed [9x][7x][6x][2x]. The latter needed to improve and once he flipped over the [4x], his rail erupted into celebratory cheers. Mcdermott received a consolation prize of $54,180 for his runner-up finish.
The winner was accompanied by quite a group of supporters. They all joined him for a picture, waiving the Colombian flag. Ospina told WSOP staff in his post-victory interview that the flag itself had a story. He bought several days ago from the Colombian airport on his way to Las Vegas. The player felt that he would need it for when he won his gold bracelet.
