Casino Growth Boosts Portugal Online Gambling Market by 8% in Q1

Portugal has revealed that its online gaming revenue rose over the first three months of 2018, partly thanks to a boost in online casino earnings.

The national gambling regulatory body – Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ) – revealed that the online gambling market of Portugal saw an 8% revenues increase in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, mainly due to a significant 18% increase in local casino revenues to €16.4 million. The iGaming revenue for the first three months as of March 31st amounted to a total of €33.8 million, which is €2.5 million more in comparison to the same period a year ago. Still, the result was €2.7 million lower compared to the final three months of 2017.

There were seven providers which were allowed to offer online gambling on the territory of Portugal, which is three more than the number of iGambling operators in the country in the same period in 2017. These entities hold an overall number of 12 operating licenses, with 7 of them giving them permission to provide games of chance and 5 of them allowing them to offer sports betting options.

Contribution to Online Gambling Revenue by Game Type

Online sports betting remained the key source of revenue over the first quarter of the year, with them accounting for a total of €17.4 million over the period. The amount generated by the sports betting operations in the country saw no significant changes on year-on-year basis and represented a more than €3 million decline from the amount generated over the last three months of 2017.

Over the period to March 31st, football was the sport which accounted for a bit more than 75% of total sports betting revenue. Basketball and tennis were the second and third largest contributors to sports betting revenue, with them accounting for 10.6% and 9.6% of the overall online sports betting revenue, respectively.

Portuguese online gambling operators reported that the games of chance generated revenue amounting to €16.4 million, which represents an almost 18% growth compared to the same period a year earlier. Online slots machines were undoubtedly the main driver of online games of chance’s revenue in the period to March 31st, with their contributions accounting for 55.7% of total bets on online games of chance. Online poker, on the other hand, brought 18.6% of the total revenue generated by online games of chance, followed by bets made by local customers on French Roulette (16.4%).

Players Participation in Portuguese Online Gambling Market

The number of player registrations in the online gambling websites permitted in Portugal amounted to approximately 890,000 as of March 31st. A total of 89,300 new player registrations were made over the first quarter of the current fiscal year, with the pace of growth in the number of new player registrations slowing by approximately 22,600 compared to the first quarter of 2017.

During the first three months of the year, players aged from 25 to 44 represented a total of 61.5% of the total number of customers registered online. The number of players aged from 18 to 24, on the other hand, accounted for 27.2% of the overall number of online players.

As far as self-exclusion is concerned, a total of 21,100 players who were registered online decided to take advantage of the opportunity and self-excluded themselves from online gambling and sports betting operations. The number of self-excluded players accounted for approximately 2.4% of the total number of registered players.
